HISTORY AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS
 
  • On October 15, 1994 the Homer association has commemorated the International Long Cane Day, for the first time in Croatia. Furthermore, within our everyday activities we have organized an international professional lecture baring the theme “Orientation and Mobility” – a prerequisite for a gratifying life of the visually impaired elderly. The International Long Cane Day has been recognized by the Croatian Parliament and since then it is celebrated every year throughout Croatia,  
  • Publishing and distribution of the first handout in Croatia geared towards the various possibilities to help a visually impaired person in motion. The publication is intended to educate the visually healthy. The title of the handout is “How to Guide a Visually Impaired Person”,  
  • In the year 1997 beginning of the operation of our playschool named “Experiencing the world through senses” for visually impaired and visually healthy preschool children, renamed later “Hip Hop” playschool,
  • Successful completion of the eight month pilot program “Assisting Visually Impaired People in Their Everyday Lives”,
  • For the first time, the Blind Children’s Center’s (from LA, California) professional literature, geared towards visually healthy children that interact with visually impaired children till their 7th year of age, was gathered and translated to Croatian,
  • A professional collaboration was firmly established with pediatricians in our society,
  • A collaboration was established with kindergartens, elementary and secondary schools,
  • Improvement of general living conditions for visually impaired people through individual approach and assistance provided as well as financial support,
  • Public awareness campaigns have been carried out since the association’s foundation in 1994 through various cultural and art manifestations and events while continually and purposely the program has been carried out since 2003 starting with the manifestation named “Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow” and later on through projects “Let’s Clear Things Up”, renamed “Let’s Open Our Eyes” and finally “Orientation Points”,  
  • Public awareness campaigns in the cities of Umag, Poreč, Rovinj, Pula, Rijeka, Zadar, Zagreb, Sisak and Čakovec. Campaigns are carried out through cultural and art exhibitions, grand stands and round tables throughout Croatia in order to attain public awareness and healthy empathy towards the problems faced by visually impaired people.
  • Beginning of the operation of our computer workshops in 2002, when the Co-operating Netherlands Foundation (CNF) invested in the procurement of the necessary computer equipment for blind and visually impaired people. The computer workshops are part of the project “The Computer and Me”, a project helping blind and visually impaired people achieve computer literacy, renamed later “Tiny Dots for Me”,
  • Enhancement of fund raising activities in order to establish the association’s goals,
  • Quality enhancement of our expert and executive team,
  • Quality enhancement of the association’s ongoing programs and activities engaging interdisciplinary professionals that will work with blind and visually impaired people,
  • Expanding the collaboration to national and international associations covering a multitude of sectors. Producing TV commercial clips: “Hip Hop” promoted on the phone. # 060 851 851, “Take Care of Your Eyes” and “Gogo surrounded by sounds”. Appearing on the TV show “Latinica” and filming the documentary movie “Love Is Not Blind” (authors Višnja Biti and Miljenko Bolanča, production by the Croatian Film Association). Producing the TV video named “Homer on TV” (Croatian Radio Zagreb, Channel One, Educational production). Production and presentation of two documentary drama shows “Why Do It This Way“ (producer Višnja Biti, Channel One, Croatian Radio Zagreb). The documentary radio show “Marija in the World of Sounds” was presented on the Berlin Documentary Radio Drama Festival. Participating in radio shows “Not the Least Unimportant” and “About Your Health” (Croatian Radio, Channel Two). Participating in the TV show “Maja Talk Show” with the theme “Spiritual Light Against the Darkness” in October 2005 (Croatian Television, Channel One) and participating in the radio show “Zona” from Buzet.
  • Production of the CD named “Embraced With Love” designed for enhancing public awareness and encouraging healthy empathy as well as rejecting prejudice and accepting differences, which is a prerequisite for social integration of preschool children, school-aged children, students and work-able visually impaired individuals (music production by Bea Productions, performers: children’s’ choir “Daisies” “Tratinčice”, Jozefina, Emir Grozdanić and Mirjana Bobuš),        
  • Printing the following publications: “How to Guide a Visually Impaired Person”, “Let’s Clear Things Up”, “Not That Way, This Way”, “Coloring Book 1”, “Early Intervention”, “Project Towards Independence”, “Step by Step”, “Studying Through Play”, “Walk With Me”, “Talk to Me”, “Blindness - Most Common Causes”, “Take Care of Your Eyes”.

 
From the above mentioned it’s clearly visible that from the year 1994 to 2005 the association has become a reputable, fully profiled organization with strong human resources and acknowledged by the society at large. The association’s long-term goal is to define activities that will be carried out during the year 2005, 2006 and further, in order to achieve the association’s set goals. The planned organization’s goals are aligned with the association’s mission and vision and are being carried out through the association’s programs and projects.
